Built in 1786 by Madeir a wine importer Henry Hill, the Physick House is the only freestanding Federal townhouse in Society Hill. Grand proportions, classic lines, and French-inspired neoclassical furnishings, complement the elegant architecture. An unusually large city garden displays specimen plantings popular during the nineteenth century, along with a winding pathway, grotto, and classical statuary.
The house takes its name from Dr. Philip Syng Physick, who took up residence here in 1815. One of the foremost surgeons of his day, Dr. Physick was affiliated with America’s first hospital, and among his celebrated patients were Dolly Madison, Chief Justice John Marshall, and President Andrew Jackson.
